A Quilt Art Educational & Inspirational Event
January 26 to February 4, 2009
Canmore, Alberta, Canada

Ann Johnston

Ann is known for her hand-painted quilts, which are widely published, internationally exhibited & found in public & private collections on several continents. Ann has been making quilts and putting dye on fabric for over 25 years. Ann’s design goals evolve according to the physical processes, that is, how the dye flows on the fabric, where the last curved piece ends, or how the last line of quilting makes the fabric lay. Her years of experimentation have led to mountains of hand dyed fabric and quilts, thousands of miles of travel, numerous exhibitions & articles, five books, & countless inspired quilters. Ann’s collectors respect her viewpoint, and her students admire her generosity & expertise in teaching the skills she has mastered.

Ann's Workshops

Quilting Hand-Dyed Fabrics
Explore ways of adding dimension, texture, & meaning to the surface of the quilt using hand or machine quilting stitches. Take advantage of the special qualities of hand-dyed fabrics though exercises and projects. Ann will demonstrate, show samples and quilts, and provide assignments to encourage students to create new kinds of textures and patterns on the fabric. Experience in piecing and quilting by machine is required, but no experience with hand-dyed fabric is required. Work at your individual level of design and colour experience.
2 days, January 31 + February 1

Introduction to Stamping with Dyes
Learn from expert Ann about stamping using thickened dyes in this introductory class. Explore simple & fun stamping techniques using the best dyes available to studio artists, as you discover the basics about mixing the dyes & colors. Learn how designs on fabric can be repeated with variations on a theme. Sample a variety of stamping tools; then design blocks of your own & explore some of their many possible combinations. Practice making design decisions as you work, in response to the way patterns appear on the fabric. The goal is to develop a personal style and approach to the printing process. Ann presents technical information according to the experience & interests of participants.
3 days, February 2, 3 & 4
