Ann Johnston

Ann is known for her hand-painted quilts, which are widely published, internationally exhibited & found in public & private collections on several continents. Ann has been making quilts and putting dye on fabric for over 25 years. Ann’s design goals evolve according to the physical processes, that is, how the dye flows on the fabric, where the last curved piece ends, or how the last line of quilting makes the fabric lay. Her years of experimentation have led to mountains of hand dyed fabric and quilts, thousands of miles of travel, numerous exhibitions & articles, four books, & many, many inspired quilters.

Introduction to Dye Painting
The perfect workshop to learn the basic characteristics, recipes, sources & applications of dye painting. A full array of colors can be mixed with the 3 primaries, & then applied directly to fabric without changing the hand of the fabric, making it particularly appropriate for quilters. Ann demonstrates & guides you through the uses of dye mixed in various consistencies, from thin to thick, & with many possible tools from sponges to rollers. Ann’s goal is that each student will learn how to adapt the dye techniques to his or her particular interests and in the process, will create a variety of fabrics that may be used in future projects.  2 days, March 10 + 11

Design & Quilt with Confidence
An information-packed 3 days that will boost every quilter’s design & quilting confidence. Ann will introduce concepts of balance, unity & variety & the basic design elements that create them--line, shape, color, value, texture, & pattern--using slides & samples of her work. Various open-ended exercises with fabric help you apply the ideas to your own work.  Ann will demonstrate a variety of  piecing, appliqué, embroidery & quilting techniques. Basic knowledge of piecing & quilting by machine are required, but Ann will guide you at your personal level of design & color experience. The course is process- oriented & though students will pursue their fabric designs through several steps, they will not be expected to finish all the projects that  begin in these explorations. 3 Days, March 12, 13, & 14
