Lorraine Torrence

Lorraine, with a Master of Fine Arts degree, uses the universal lessons of color, composition, line and space to create wearable and wall textiles using the quiltmaker’s techniques of piecing, appliqué and quilting. Her wearables have been included in many prestigious fashion shows, & have won numerous major awards. Lorraine resides in Seattle, WA, but travels internationally teaching. Her books & classes guide quilters to greater creativity.

Shifting Perspectives

Quilters have used the repetitive block as a design format for centuries. Lorraine will guide you through her unique process that couples traditional techniques with very contemporary finished quilts. Using a Multi-view lens, design an abstract block from what you see around you. Simplify it until it is easy to piece & reproduce it nine times as a 15-inch block. Then, imitating what happens to images seen through the lens, cut each one in a different place, producing an image that shifts as it travels across the quilt. The approach sounds simple, but the results are stunning. Beginner quilters (with some piecing experience) very welcome!  2 days, March 10 + 11

Design Essentials

All levels of quilters are encouraged to join this three-day class for a jam-packed tour of the essentials of good design. Explore value, scale, line, shape, unity, balance, composition & design sources in a series of exercises using paper and pencil, fabric fusing & glue stick & construction paper. Work will be exercises only, no sewing. Learn in class, make your masterpiece at home!
3 Days, March 12, 13 & 14

*Lorraine’s new book, Shifting Perspectives, is available from The Sugar Pine Company.
